Ahoy Everyone!

Well, we're 0 for 2 on having our Dead of Winter Party. Who would have thought that the only two snow storms of the winter would fall on our party dates. Go figure. But we are a persistent group and have reschedule the event yet again to March 3 at 6:00 PM at the home of Jill & Matt Clement. Their address is:

This is a pot luck, byob event. OSCA will provide soft drinks, water, plates, utensils, etc. Join us for a fun filled evening and hear about the upcoming events for the season.

Fleet Night will be on March 18 from 5:30 - 8:00 PM at the West Marine Store in Middletown, RI. West Marine offers us tremendous discounts so get your shopping lists together! West Marine will provide refreshments and a guest speaker. I hope to see you there!

Dead of Winter Party Rescheduled

Well it seems like our Dead of Winter Party channeled the winter season to Rhode Island. So far there is 6 inches of snow on the ground in Bristol. So, due to the hazardous conditions the Dead of Winter Party has been reschedule to February 11. The party will still be at Jill and Matt Clement's house in North Kingstown and will start at 6pm. We hope to see you there!

Hi All,

Winter has finally arrived so that must mean it is time for the Dead of Winter Parties. That's right, parties.

For those in the Northeast the OSCA Dead of Winter Party is this Saturday at 6:00 PM at the home of Jill and Matt Clement. Jill and Matt live at 237 Cole Dr in North Kingstown, RI. Come share some stories, good food and hear aboout the upcoming OSCA season! This is a pot luck and byob event.

For those in the South, the FLOSCA Dead of Winter Party will be on Sunday, February 19 at the home of Denis and Vanessa Cournoyer. Here is the flier on that event:

Ahoy OSCA Fleet!

It sure doesn't feel like November. Once we got by the freak snow storm in October the weather has been incredible. Hopefully everyone has been able to put their boats to bed for the winter without incurring frostbite.

The Haul Out party was a great success. We had 39 people attend the event on 11/5 at Jacky's Galaxie in Bristol. It was nice to see Cary Hallinan back in the area and meet our newest members Herb Kaiser and Betty Stickney. Herb and Betty bought Odyssey from Ron and Ann Nickles.
The 2012 Flag officers were introduced. The are:

The Dead of Winter Party will have a new venue for 2012. Jill and Matt Clement have graciously offered to host the party. They live in North Kingstown, RI. The date and time will be communicated to everyone once that has been decided.

The offices will hold their first meeting in December and I am looking for input from you. Specifically input on the following topics would be greatly appreciated:
- What types of events would you like OSCA to hold? Are there new things you would like us to consider?
- What can we do to increase participation at events?
- What can we do to increase membership

It's hard to believe Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

2011 Summer Update

OSCA jumped right into the 2011 sailing season with its first “on the water” event, the Memorial Day Rendezvous at the East Greenwich Yacht Club, hosted by Peter and Sandy Borowiec, s/v “Alpenwind.” Saturday, OSCA members reconnected after a long winter with a potluck picnic in the club’s gazebo overlooking Greenwich Cove. On Sunday evening, a delicious buffet catered by Excelabrations was presented in the club’s dining room where Commodore John Impagliazzo welcomed all and Cruise Captain Bill Kaylor previewed the plans for the July 23-31 summer cruise. After dinner, OSCA Vice Commodore Jeff Chirnside introduced Matt Franco, comic/magician, to entertain.

On June 10-12, OSCA rendezvous’d at the Rhode Island Yacht Club to join in R.I.’s annual Gaspee Day celebration, which included fireworks Friday night, a parade on Saturday morning, and a re-enactment of the burning of the British ship, the Gaspee, by colonial rebels. Members Bill and Stella Cote hosted an impromptu cocktail hour aboard s/v “Sail La Vie” at the docks at RIYC, where one could also partake of lobster, steak, or ribs in the yacht club’s dining room. Thanks to RIYC for allowing OSCA once again to rendezvous at the club. Not even the miserable rainy weather could dampen our spirits.

OSCA’s summer cruise commenced July 23 with 11 yachts: s/v’s “Pooka”, “Prints of Tides”, “Sudsea”, “Wicked Winch,” “Seanchai,” “Argo”, “Galexy”, “Nunki,” “Morning Star”, “Morning Star II,” and “Allure.” No one could miss us in our florescent yellow 2011 cruise t-shirts, courtesy of Dave Arnold, s/v “Prints of Tides”. Fleet Captain Bill Kaylor scheduled the first stop at Third Beach in Portsmouth, RI. Members cooled off from the 90 plus degree heat by swimming off the boats and later dingying in for an evening cookout on the beach. The fleet then spent two days in the New Bedford, Ma., harbor, where the Harbor Development Council along with Harbor Agent, John Anderson, did their best to acquaint us with this working fishing port. Highlights were the whaling museum, the cobbled-stone streets of the historic district, and a rather raucous dinner at Fathom’s.

On Tuesday, the fleet relaxed in secluded Sippican Harbor in Marion, Ma., home of the “Marion to Bermuda Race” and Tabor Academy. On Wed., OSCA traveled to Woods Hole, Ma., still waiting for the wind to pick up without thunderstorms. There, cheered on by dozens of onlookers, the entire fleet paraded through a narrow canal and under the raised drawbridge to moor in Eel Pond for the night. Continuing on to Vineyard Haven, Ma., the following day (still no wind!) the boats stayed the night in the inner harbor, and a number of sailors enjoyed the fine dining of the “Blue Canoe.” Finally, the wind picked up, and some long-awaited sailing was enjoyed in Nantucket Sound and Buzzard’s Bay. No mooring was available inside crowded Cuttyhunk, so the fleet anchored for the night outside before proceeding to Westport, MA., where chef/ Fleet Captain Bill and Paula Kaylor held what has become the annual OSCA lobster boil.

On August 20th, Lee and Kevin Rabbitt, and Jill and Matt Clement, s/v Sorritas, hosted the 3rd annual wine tasting at the Dutch Harbor boatyard. On Sunday morning, the OSCA gang hiked up to the Village Hearth Bakery in Jamestown, where Sorritas crew had arranged a variety of freshly- baked croissants, muffins and other pastries for breakfast.
Despite massive power outages from Hurricane Irene, Bristol Yacht Club was able to restore their docks. Just as we about to cancel our annual Labor Day Rendezvous, BYC emailed us that power had been restored and they would be able to host Labor Day Weekend. Lobster chef/ Fleet Captain Bill and Paula Kaylor, s/v Seanchai, delighted the club with their renown Lobster Boil. Commodore John Impagliazzo took the opportunity to thank those members who volunteered to host OSCA 2011 events.
He was also honored to present William and Kathleen Hague, s/v Carpe Ventum, OSCA’s 2011 Founders Award for their years of service to the club.

News from the OSCA Commodore

The weatherman says winter will be over in time for the Memorial Day rendezvous at EGYC. There are also claims that a southerly breeze will emerge on the bay. (I’m waiting for the point spread on a southerly breeze.)
           Otherwise O.S.C.A. is off to a busy start. We had great beginning with a well-attended Dead of Winter Party on February 12, hosted by Vice Commodore Dave and Sandy Arnold, s/v “Prints of Tides”, at their home in Mansfield, MA. As usual, the potluck dishes were outstanding, especially all the deserts. I do have to admit, I was partial to Matt Clements chicken parmesan and somebody’s chocolate pudding trifle. On March 20th , West Marine hosted the O.S.C.A. Fleet Night at their new Flagship store in Middletown, RI. Discounts, some substantial, were offered on all of their products. They provided hors d'oeuvre and a presentation on anchoring techniques and problems. Afterwards, many of the officers and members met at Codington Cove Brew Pub for a bite to eat and a brew to cleanse the palate.
        On April 10th , we had our Wine and Cheese Potluck Dinner at Quonset Davisville Naval Yacht Club. Our thanks to Jeff and Susan Mahall, s/v “Meltimi”, for hosting this event at QDNYC as well as to Eastern Yachts and Latitude Yacht Brokerage who donated door prizes. Jennifer McCann of URI School of Oceanography and RI Coastal Resources Management Council spoke on the RI Special Area Management Plan, SAMP. SAMP conducts an extensive study of marine users of the ocean area from Martha’s Vineyard to Long Island and the impact of wind farms, etc. on environmental concerns, commercial, and recreational use of the area. Dr. Harris Faigle, s/v “Even Keel” of CANE gave an update on plans for the Catalina East Coast Rendezvous in New Bedford Harbor, July 29-31.
        Memorial Day weekend, Peter and Sandy Borowiec, s/v “Alpenwind”, are again hosting our annual rendezvous at East Greenwich Yacht Club. The plan is for a cocktail social and potluck dinner Saturday evening, followed by a catered buffet dinner Sunday night with entertainment by Matt Franco, comedian/magician. Continental breadfasts at the club’s gazebo are also planned for Sunday and Monday morning.
     Fleet Captain Bill and Paula Kaylor, s/v “Seanchai” , just published this year’s summer cruise itinerary, July 23-31. You can access it at http://oscafleet.org/cruise.html. In the meantime, if you’re sailing around with nothing to do this summer, there’s lots going on: the J-Boat Regatta in Newport (June 15 – 19), the Quonset Air Show (June 25 & 26), the Wickford Art Festival (July 9 & 10), the Newport Folk Festival (July 30 & 31), the Newport Jazz Festival (August 6 & 7), and the Newport Boat Show (September 15 -18).
    The board still has plans in the queue for a Dutch Harbor Rendezvous (August 20th) in Jamestown, otherwise known as the M&M best wine awards; you can eat your M&M’s or vote for your favorite vintage with them! The BYC Rendezvous Labor Day Weekend will include the popular “Seanchai” lobster boil. A fabulous sailing season is ahead for all OSCA vessels, captains, and crew!

The weekend of September 16-19, the Ocean State Catalina Association greeted the arrival of fall at the Newport International Boat Show. Rear Commodore Jeff Chirnside, S/V Sudsea, coordinated with Eastern Yacht Sales to set up an OSCA information booth, which was staffed by OSCA members throughout the three-day event. There was also plenty of time to drool over the newest boats, browse the exhibits, and visit the refreshment stands.

OSCA’s final sailing rendezvous, held at Wickford Yacht Club over a chilly Columbus Day holiday weekend, was hosted by Lee and Kevin Rabbitt and Jill and Matt Clement, S/V Sorritas. A pot-luck cookout was held on the waterfront deck Saturday evening. Sunday morning, the energetic Soritas crew led a walking (...shopping?) tour of historic Wickford Village and later that evening hosted a pizza party at the yacht club.

Kudos to Jim and Daisy Gilmore, S/V Daisy, who organized this year’s Haul-Out party at the Newport Playhouse, which presented the comedy “A Nice Family Gathering.” The Oct.24th event included an extensive buffet dinner beforehand and was followed by a cabaret. Commodore Anne Anthony, S/V Tianna, presented OSCA’s 2010 Founders Award to Past Commodore Ron Lewis, S/V Argo, in recognition of his contributions to the Ocean State Catalina Association. OSCA members voted in the new slate of officers: Commodore John Impagliazzo, Vice Commodore Jeff Chirnside, Rear Commodore Dave Arnold, and Fleet Captain Bill Kaylor. Plans are already underway for next summer’s get-togethers and cruise!
